Brain Fitness
By: Sally Hodgson, Director of Activities

Take care of that brain! Research shows that it is essential to exercise your mind to keep your brain fit. Several apps are available on your smartphone or tablet for brain fitness and dementia prevention. Some of the most popular are Lumosity App, CogniFit Brain Fitness, and Personal Zen. Playing this game adds real-time data into Alzheimer’s research.

Nutrition is also vital to brain fitness. A healthy diet is a critical part of having not just a healthy body, but also a healthy brain. Walnuts, dark chocolate, salmon, and avocado have essential nutrients.

Learning new things is equally important. Learn a new style of cooking, try yoga, attend a lecture, or learn a new instrument. At Good Samaritan, we partner with the Senior Learning Network Generations program. We’ve been to the FDR Presidential library, Glacier Bay Alaska, the Hearst mansion, the Smithsonian and more without ever leaving the Home.

Recent research suggests that being physically active is just as crucial for brain fitness. There are several opportunities at GSH. Monday through Saturday, there is an exercise group in the Social Room at 11:30 am. These exercises include both standing and sitting reps, although you may sit for all of them if you wish. Fridays at 2 pm, Joe leads us in Chair Chi in the Social Room. This is a seated class. Mondays at 2:15 pm in the Social Room, Joe teaches a seated Yoga class. Each neighborhood offers at least one physically active activity on weekdays. Get moving and exercise that brain today!
