“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.”           Luke 12:6-7

I need a haircut.  It has been nine weeks since I have seen my stylist (that sounds so glamorous, like I could be an Instagram influencer) I laugh about it, but I don’t like having my hair in my eyes. I don’t like looking disheveled.  Most of you can relate because you are missing your stylist too.  The guys with no hair are smiling from ear to ear and taunting those of us who look like we are auditioning for the movie cast-a-way. But in this case hair is a metaphor for something larger.

This pandemic has been the great equalizer in that roots are showing, hair is shaggy and none of us have been able to have our appearance propped up by professionals. Our vanity was not what Jesus was addressing. Jesus was reminding us that God is detail oriented. It doesn’t matter if roots are obvious, hair is shaggy or you have a bad haircut because you cut it yourself—God knows!  And that also means God knows when you are sad, when you are afraid, when you are lonely—God knows. In spite of all that God knows—the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly—we are cherished! So put on a hat, (and a face covering) and go forth remembering that God knows AND cares!

  Let us pray,

It is beyond our understanding that you have the hairs on our heads numbered and that you care for us in a million little ways that we never even notice. Continue to walk with us and love us. Help us as we make decisions moving forward in uncertain times. In Christ’s name we pray.  Amen.

Faithfully, The Reverend Timothy A. White, Pastor
