Ash Wednesday & Lent
By: Chaplain James Riley, Director of Pastoral Services

Easter is coming: the yearly celebration marking the resurrection of Jesus, the victory over death, the complete demonstration of God’s love for us and the fulfillment of his promise of grace. Many take advantage of the 40 days before Easter to prepare themselves for the joyous celebration. This period is called Lent. It is a time of repentance and a renewed commitment to a relationship with God.

Lent begins this Wednesday, March 6, with Ash Wednesday. You will see many people on that day with a dark mark on their forehead. It is created with ashes and intended to be in the shape of a cross. It reflects that person’s commitment to drawing closer to God, and you are welcome to join them, whether you receive ashes or not. I have placed around the home a short publication explaining more about these things. Feel free to pick one up, read it, share it, and if you have questions, let me know.

A Bible study will also be offered each Wednesday following devotions (about 9:45 am) for six weeks, beginning March 13. Please join us as we study the letter to the Colossians. The apostle Paul wrote this letter to remind and encourage them in living by faith in Jesus alone. However you choose to grow your faith and celebrate Easter and God’s great gift, I pray God blesses you with his hope, joy, and peace.

This week we are praying for the residents in Eastbrook Lane and for the Accounting staff.

Our Scripture of the Week, for Ash Wednesday and first week of Lent is Psalm 51:1-2: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”

Weekly Inspiration
