Importance of a Good Night’s Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for your overall health and your mood at any age. However, it can be particularly important in older adults. Sleep problems in older adults are not uncommon. Common problems include having trouble falling asleep, waking up frequently in the night or early morning, or getting less quality sleep.

Primary sleep disorders can be:

  • insomnia, or difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or restless sleep
  • sleep apnea, or brief interruptions in breathing during sleep often marked by heavy snoring
  • restless leg syndrome, or the overwhelming need to move your legs during sleep
  • circadian rhythm sleep disorders, or a disrupted sleep-wake cycle

If you’re having a sleeping problem, it’s a good idea to talk to your physician. If he or she suspects a sleep disorder, a sleep study might be recommended.

Good sleeping habits include:

  • going to bed and waking up at the same time each day
  • using the bed only for sleep, not other activities like work or watching TV
  • avoiding bright lights before bed
  • limiting liquid before bed and avoiding caffeine and alcohol
  • eating three to four hours before bedtime
  • exercising regularly, but not right before bedtime

If you think you have a sleep problem, don’t wait until the problem starts to affect your health.

Prayer Request and Scripture

This week we are praying for the residents in the Foose Center and the Spiritual Care staff, ministers, and ministries.

Our Scripture of the Week is Psalm 11 (The Message): “I’ve already run for dear life straight to the arms of God. So why would I run away now when you say, ‘Run to the mountains’…? God hasn’t moved to the mountains; his holy address hasn’t changed… God’s business is putting things right; he loves getting the lines straight, setting us straight. Once we’re standing tall, we can look him straight in the eye.”

Weekly Inspiration

“What is success? I think it is a mixture of having a flair for the thing you are doing; knowing that it is not enough, that you have got to have hard work and a certain sense of purpose.” – Margaret Thatcher
